CCSSE Dimensions of Engagement

Description A set of index scores derived from the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) that measure how actively students engage in effective educational practices, such as collaborative learning, academic challenge, and interaction with faculty.

Calculations

Each dimension score comes from a set of related survey questions. For every question, a student’s answer (e.g., “Never,” “Sometimes,” “Often,” “Very often”) is converted into a proportion of the highest possible response, then those proportions are averaged across all the questions in that dimension.

The result is a score from 0 to 100 showing, on average, how close students’ answers were to the maximum possible level of engagement. For example, a score of 70 means students reported about 70% of the highest possible engagement in that Dimension of Engagement.

    • Student-Faculty Interaction: The frequency and quality of meaningful contact with instructors.
    • Support for Learners: How well the institution supports student success and fosters positive campus relationships.
  • Raw scores are used instead of standardized scores because they are comparable over time, as they aren’t affected by shifts in the national comparison cohort.
  • The raw scores were typically scaled from 0 to 1 but were multiplied by 100 to improve ease of interpretation.
